Course description

AbSec LDC’s Project Waterways is a sector-leading training program on cultural responsiveness and trauma-informed practice — refined and strengthened following a highly successful 2025 rollout across the country. This is a deep, two-day learning experience that centres First Nations worldviews, ways of knowing, and ways of being — to fundamentally strengthen how your organisation works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families. The program takes a whole-of-organisation approach, targeting practice, policy, and leadership simultaneously. Participants leave with real skills, practical frameworks, and a renewed sense of purpose and solidarity in this critical work. Project Waterways is an acronym: Weaving, Anti-racism, Trauma-Informed, Education, Responsiveness, With Wisdom, Awareness, Yarning, and Solidarity. Every word is intentional. Every element of the program is designed to specifically educate in with a culturally centred focus.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand and apply First Nations worldviews, ways of knowing, being and doing within service delivery
  • Recognise the ongoing impacts of colonisation and intergenerational trauma on individuals, families, and communities
  • Support Aboriginal families to lead decision-making processes through local, place-based cultural governance.
  • Apply trauma-informed principles in day-to-day practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families
  • Identify and actively work to dismantle racism and structural bias within your organisation’s practice and policy
  • Build genuine, respectful partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and colleagues
  • Lead and embed culturally responsive change at all levels of your organisation — from frontline practice to leadership and governance
  • Strengthen your commitment to self-determination — understanding why it matters and how to support it in practice
