Culture in Practice

The Culture in Practice training program has been developed by AbSec’s Learning and Development Centre (LDC) in direct response to Family is Culture Recommendation 82, which highlights the need to strengthen cultural capability and accountability across the child and family service sector. The program supports practitioners, leaders, and organisations to build the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to work effectively with Aboriginal families and communities, ensuring culturally responsive and safe practice that aligns with legislative and policy expectations.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the legislative requirements for active efforts and how to apply them in everyday practice.
• Develop skills to interpret and implement the Act within a culturally informed framework.
• Support Aboriginal families to lead decision-making processes through local, place-based cultural governance.
• Embed the five placement principles into practice and decision-making to maintain family and community connections.
• Develop meaningful, living documents that strengthen identity, belonging, and connection to culture.
• Use an inquisitive and strengths-based approach to influence systems and promote culturally safe practice.
• Differentiate between genuine risk and cultural difference, and recognise systemic bias in assessing Aboriginal families.
• Reflect on and consolidate knowledge to promote sustainable cultural change and accountability across services.
